Okpaa Masquerade Thrills Audience in Virginia, USA

A presentation of Okpaa masquerade from Afikpo, Ebonyi State, Nigeria at the Igbo Village in Staunton, Virginia, USA

The Igbo Village is a pioneering effort to create a replica of a farm village as it existed in a 17th century Nigeria when it is estimated that hundreds of thousands of slaves were taken from Igbo towns and villages to various parts of the United States. It is estimate that 40 percent of the slaves were shipped to Virginia were Igbos. These slaves contributed immensely to the economic development of many states in the U.S.

Several generations later, the States of Maryland, Virginia other U.S. governmental and non-governmental entities decided to commemorate the contributions of Igbos by erecting the Igbo Farm Village at the Frontier Museum in Staunton, Virginia.

Leading up to the event, Igbos from all South East states were invited to give a cultural presentation. Ebonyi State was the first to deliver a presentation. The Ebonyi team presented Okpaa masquerade and Nkwa Umuagbogho dance – both performed by people from Afikpo – and a wrestling contest jointly performed by people from Edda and Afikpo. After the presentations, spectators at the event gave the Ebonyi State team a rousing applause.
